The Gateway to a Professional Career in Live Sound

The Higher Occupational Certificate in Sound Operation (NQF Level 5) equips students to set up, operate and maintain professional audio equipment across live, recorded and broadcast environments. Covering sound theory, mixing, acoustics, fault-finding and business skills, graduates are industry-ready as Sound Technicians or freelance operators.

Whether you’re new to the industry or already working in sound and want formal recognition, this qualification bridges real-world experience with accredited education. You’ll gain the technical depth, practical skills and business understanding to operate professionally – from small venues to large-scale live events.

This qualification is structured across three learning pillars:

Knowledge Modules

You'll build a strong theoretical foundation covering the science and principles behind professional audio:

  • Theory of Sound
  • Sound Equipment Principles
  • Characteristics of Audio Hardware and Software
  • Electronic Maintenance Theory
  • Basic Principles of Business Management

Practical Skill Modules

You'll apply your knowledge through hands-on, supervised practical training:

  • Apply Theory of Sound
  • Features and Functions of Sound Equipment
  • Operate Audio Equipment for Production
  • Maintain Sound Equipment
  • Apply Business Management Skills

Work Experience Modules

Choose your specialisation track:

  • Elective A: Live Events
  • Elective B: Recorded Events

Is this qualification nationally recognised?

Yes. The Higher Occupational Certificate: Sound Operator (SAQA ID 120748) is registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) at Level 5 and quality-assured by the QCTO through MICT SETA.

What can I do after completing this course?

Graduates can work as Sound Assistants, Junior Sound Technicians, Sound Technicians or freelance Sound Operators across live events, broadcast, film and studio environments. The qualification also provides a pathway into NQF Level 6 diploma programmes.

Do I need prior experience in sound?

No. The minimum entry requirement is any NQF Level 4 qualification, for example a National Senior Certificate / Matric. No prior sound experience is required.

Can I get credit for experience I already have?

Yes. RPL, also known as Recognition of Prior Learning, is available. Speak to our admissions team about having your existing skills assessed.

Will I work on real equipment?

Absolutely. Hands-on practical training is central to this programme. You'll work with professional audio equipment from day one.

What is the difference between Elective A and Elective B?

Elective A focuses on live event environments, including concerts, conferences and theatre. Elective B focuses on recorded and broadcast contexts, including studio, radio, podcast and film. You choose the track that matches your career goals.

  • Full-Time: 1 year
  • Part-Time: 2 years
This qualification is designed to be accessible to both school leavers and aspiring audio professionals. The entry requirements for this course are:
  • Any NQF Level 4 qualification, such as a National Senior Certificate / Matric or equivalent
  • RPL available for learners without formal qualifications but with relevant industry experience
  • No prior audio or technical experience required
  • Applicants must be 16 years or older

Students are not required to purchase specialist equipment to begin the programme - all professional audio gear is provided in our facilities. However, for home study and theory components, you will need:

  • A laptop or desktop computer, Windows or Mac
  • Reliable internet access
  • Headphones, with over-ear headphones recommended for critical listening exercises

Optional but recommended as you progress:

  • Personal set of in-ear monitors
  • USB audio interf

Sibusiso (Breeze) Shezi

Lecturer

Breeze aka Zulu Bass King is a musician who brings years of experience in studio, on radio, and on the stage to Rise Academy.
He has had tracks played on major SA radio stations, multiple music nominations, and has performed at some of South Africa’s largest music events. He’s worked with a huge array of top artists such as Nasty C, Soweto Gospel Choir, and Ladysmith Black Mambazo, just to mention a few.

He used to dance and play rugby competitively and loves to run fitness drills with our performance students to get them ready to pull off amazing stage routines.

CHAY COOK

DIGITAL

Chay is a Public Relations practitioner who manages all of the academy’s
communications. Her role combines an enthusiasm for social media, digital
marketing, and music.
She is also on hand to help students with their marketing and PR queries by
ensuring that her door is always open, and if students are lucky there might even be
some peppermint crisp tart up for grabs since her recipe is one of the best.

JAMES VERKERK

LECTURER


James is a DJ who got his start at the age of 16. He brings his onstage energy and
enthusiasm for music to the Rise Academy classroom where he teaches students
everything they need to know about the art of DJing. He is a skilled sound engineer
with a background in recording, producing and mixing.
James also trained as a classical pianist and is an avid surfer.

CRAIG GREEN

CO-FOUNDER

With more than two decades of experience in event organising, planning and logistics, Craig knows the ins and outs of the music world. He brings an invaluable
network of industry contacts to the Rise Academy community.
In 1998, Craig began U-PARTY, an event production and management company assisting schools to raise funds through community events and socials. He holds a BComm degree from the University of the Witwatersrand and is a self- proclaimed lego aficionado.

SUE GREEN

CO-FOUNDER & MD

Sue brings her business acumen and passion for youth development to the academy, which she launched in 2015. She is a savvy consultant who is experienced in coordinating music events that attract young audiences.
Sue’s academic background in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics (PPE) piqued her interest in business ethics — a subject she ended up teaching at UCT during the final year of her Honours degree. She also loves cats and practices Jiu-jitsu.
